Act 1 Video Player App Review
Something that I found missing from my first Android phone – the G1 was a decent video player. I’ve gone through many and have finally stuck with Act 1 Video Player and the experience so far has been very good.
My main gripes with the other options available for Android are that they are too basic an they don’t do everything I need and would expect from such a powerful device. Luckily, Act 1 Video Player has filled this void for me. The app features some great features that you would expect from a PC video player such as subtitle support, zoom options, playlists, thumbnails, seek bar, timer and a while host of other features. The feature that really sold the app to me is the ability to play in the background – this means you can be listening to your video whilst either doing something else on your phone or having the screen off. This important feature has been lacking from all other players but it is extremely handy for people like me who sometimes just like to listen to a video whilst perhaps surfing the internet or checking Facebook. The implementation is a little clunky but I assume this is due to limitations of Android itself rather than of the app. To enable this mode you need to press the menu and select play in background – nothing too hard but it’s not quite as seamless as minimising the window and away you go, there is also a slight pause in the audio whilst this transition is happening.
The user interface is as you’d expect from a video player – nothing out of the ordinary from what you will be used to on your PC but made for Android. It works really well and is nice and consistant throughout which makes navigation a breeze.
A common complaint of this app is the fact that it doesn’t support many formats of videos and that codec availability is dependant on your device. Whilst I can see this as a problem for some people, it personally doesn’t bother me. I’d rather covert a file to a 50 – 100mb MP4 per TV episode than having a 175mb AVI. For anyone with a fairly recent computer a conversion is very fast and my personal recommendation is to use a free program called Handbrake and convert to MP4.
All in all, this app is the best featured video player so far for Android. It does come at a small price of $2.49 but there is a demo so you can try before you buy and it really is such a small price to pay for a great app such as this. I can only see this app getting better with updates and I recommend any video enthusiasts to purchase it or at least give it a try.

I was wondering if in the future you where planning on updating the app to enable slow motion playback.
I am try to get this app to auto rotate the video display when you move the device from landscape to portrate . rotate the device and the video remains in a horizontal plane !
btw I am trying to get this working on a onda vx580r tablet/pmp running android 2.1 , the act1 app is 3.8.0. The strange thing about it is that I have g-sensor enabled on both the device and the app . When I rotate it the controls rotate , just not the video display !

I actually like what you have bought here, certainly like what you are saying and the best way by which you assert it. You’re making it entertaining and you still take care of to keep it sensible.
